The Victoria University of Wellington Council has extended the feedback period for two weeks to ensure that all those wanting to comment have an opportunity to do so.
The Council voted unanimously on 27 July to recommend that the Minister of Education approve University of Wellington as the new legal name for the University, as well as adopt a new Māori name of Te Herenga Waka.
The draft decision also includes a commitment to the ongoing use of the word ‘Victoria’ to ensure its heritage is honoured and maintained.
Victoria University of Wellington Chancellor Neil Paviour-Smith says the Council has listened to those who have requested an extension and granted the two-week extension. The deadline is now 5pm on Monday 27 August.
Mr Paviour-Smith also thanked everybody who has provided feedback so far. All responses provided on the matter will be considered by the Council before it makes a final decision, which is now expected to happen at its Council meeting on 24 September.
He encouraged people to visit the University’s website for information about the reasons underpinning the draft decision and to submit their views to the feedback channels established by the University.
The University held three public meetings this week to discuss the draft decision. Around 90 people in total attended the meetings.
