Singapore Airlines' new flights between Wellington and Melbourne appear set to bring a price war between the capital and a popular sporting and cultural destination, subsidised by ratepayers.
After just 19 months, Singapore Airlines has ditched its "capital connection" flights which connected Wellington and Singapore through Canberra, the Australian capital.
The route has been highly controversial, after it emerged that a ratepayer-backed fund had agreed to provide millions of dollars in "marketing support" for the route over up to a decade.
